   Athletes

Gymnast goes from deliberate play to deliberate practice from usually around 6-7 years of age. The sport is known for its physical challenging and demanding exercises, which requires hundreds and maybe thousands of hours practice. The risk of injury is high and the fear of becoming injured or re-injured tends to be even higher for many athletes.

Sports psychology is much more than just giving you a set of mental tools and techniques to help you cope with this “fear”. It’s about self-awareness and personal growth – developing as a person, as well as an athlete Succeeding in sport requires years of dedication and practice. However success and medals are not given. Thus in the world of sport there are usually more downs than ups (result wise). Learning how to handle everyday challenges, disappointment, negativity, stress and anxiety can sometimes feel hopeless. However working through psychological skill training relevant to the athlete’s challenges is a great coping mechanism, which helps performance development and to change the focus from outcome-orientation to the process.

   Coaches

It is widely recognised that coaches play a primary part in developing and improving the talent and skills of the athletes, through instruction, management and careful organisation of exercises. Coaches need support, with the vast responsibilities that go with the role. Coaches need to be able to reflect upon their own performance and understand how significant an impact they can have upon their team. The communication between the coach an the athlete are essential towards performance development, however including and keeping an open communication with parents could be an important factor as they are one of the main support players around the athlete.

   Parents

Athlete’s parents are one of the main support players in the part of their children’s sport performance. Thus, a frequent worry a lot of parents are facing is how they can best help their children to prepare, perform and enjoy their sport. Competing and training in a specific sport is based on hard work and dedication. However, there is never a guaranty of success and medals. There are several psychological coping mechanisms, which is great to practice together with your child. You can read more about this on (Coping-mechanisms). By raising awareness and understanding how you as a parent can help and support the “child athlete” in best possible manner is significant in order to gain a positive experience and development for the child.
